“Through Sea State, I found something I didn’t even realize I was missing: a surf anchor. A purpose that runs much deeper than progression or simply getting better for the sake of getting better.

Through setting surf intentions, the workbooks, resources, support from Maddy, the Sea State retreat, and being surrounded by other women, I started to understand what surfing really means to me. It’s the aliveness, the confidence, the power, the strength, the energy. Those are the reasons I show up for myself through surfing.

Sea State helped me uncover that deeper, emotional truth. And when you surf from that place, the ego melts away. What’s left is pure positive energy, joy, and gratitude. That’s what Sea State has given me: a completely different relationship with surfing, and a deeper connection to the vital life force I get from being in the ocean.”

Sea State is for women who want to become better surfers without turning the ocean into another place they have to prove themselves

We were taught to measure everything by how good we are at it. To turn every love into a metric, every joy into a project, every morning into something to optimize.

Even surfing became one more thing to get better at. One more place to fall behind, compare ourselves, and prove ourselves. But surfing was never supposed to be about the score.

It’s an anchor. A purpose that runs deeper than progression. A way back into your body, your connection to nature, and the vital life force the ocean has always offered us, before anyone taught us to keep score.

Sea State is where we put the scorekeeping down.

Where surfing gets to be a devotion again, not a performance. Where you can become a better surfer without losing the reason you fell in love with it in the first place. Where you build a life around the waves on purpose, alongside women who are doing the same.

Because there’s a whole system built to keep us busy and disconnected.

And it works better when we’re too tired to surf, too busy to play, and too disconnected from each other to build the kind of community we actually need.

So this is our way of opting out. Not by making ourselves smaller or not trying, but by choosing something more real.

To dream bigger.
To design the ocean life we actually want.
To return to the water.
To keep showing up for ourselves and each other.

On purpose. Together.

you might be one of us if…

  • You keep saying you want to surf more, and the weeks keep going by anyway.

  • You're a little intimidated by your local lineup, and you're tired of pretending you're not.

  • Surfing sometimes feels like the only thing that matters. You plan your life around the tides. You wake up before the sun, or you move your whole schedule so you can surf midday when it's glassy. But you still feel lost on the journey.

  • You're building work-life balance so you can go surf whenever you want to, but you still don’t have examples of how women are doing that in real life.

  • Your surfboards are your birkins.

  • You don't want bro culture or big egos. You want to surf for the female gaze.

  • You don't know what board to buy next, but you know it's the thing that unlocks your next level, and you don't know who to ask.

  • You want surfing to feel joyful again. Not like logistics. Not like proof you're good enough to be out there.

  • You're not looking for a bootcamp. You're looking for a way back in.

  • What you actually want, under all of it: to be seen. In your surfing, and in your love for it. And to find the women who feel it too.

  • You've wanted this for a long time. And wanting it quietly has started to feel like settling.

There's a certain kind of woman who gets all of this. Who gets why one good session is the highlight of your whole month. We get it because we feel it too.

Inside Sea State

your guides.

This isn't just a platform. It's your surf family, your coaches, and a safe place to land, all in one.

Maddy

Marine biologist turned ocean artist, surfer, and founder of Sea State. I’ve spent most of my life finding my way back to the water. I was a scientific diver at Scripps Oceanography, lived aboard a sailboat for nearly a decade, and built a career around telling stories about the ocean through science, art, photography, and surfing.

Surfing can change the way we move through the world. It asks us to be present, to trust ourselves, to take up space, to get comfortable being uncomfortable, and to keep paddling toward the life we actually want.

Over the years, I’ve watched how much can change when women have the right people around them. More confidence. Bigger dreams. More adventure. More willingness to try the thing they thought was out of reach. That’s why I created Sea State.

I want to help more women surf better, trust themselves more deeply, and build lives around the ocean. Because I don’t think we’re meant to make our lives smaller. Sea State is an invitation to imagine what else might be possible.

Founder and Coach

Timmy

Your favorite surfer's favorite surfer. The eternal grom, whether he's in a 20 foot barrel or 2 inches of whitewater. No one on earth is more stoked than Timmy. He's a professional surfer who left the championship tour, at 11th in the world, to chase his real vision: become one of the most barreled people on the planet.

He's also a true mermaid, deeply in touch with the ocean, which is exactly why he thrives in this space with us.

Our technique coach, our insider for all things surf, and the one always reminding us not to take life too seriously, that the wins are worth celebrating, and that learning is supposed to be fun.

Not everyone gets to work with one of the best and most barreled surfers in the world. Timmy’s job in Sea State is to answer any technique questions in our video analysis coaching. He also helps film our meetups and retreats too.

Plus he’s the hook up for ordering surfboards, gear, or answering any other questions you have.

Pro-Surfer, Technique Coach

Lauren

I’ve spent the last six years as a brand marketer at Surfline sharing the stories of surfers who live and breathe the ocean, and somewhere along the way I became one of them.

That work has taken me to incredible breaks around the world and completely unlocked my obsession with surf travel, warm water, and the kind of trips you plan your whole year around. I live in Santa Cruz, surf here as much as I can, and have made a home in this grungy feral surf town life.

I’m fluent in Spanish and chronically drawn to Latin America. Dolphin energy is my natural state.

I came to Sea State because I believe surfing and ocean devotion can be a real platform for healing, for women coming back to themselves, taking up more space, and building lives that actually feel aligned. As community manager I’m here to nurture that. To show up for the women in this community and help us find our way.

Sea State Tour:

Sea State is a private community for women surfers who want more support, structure, and connection in their surfing.

Think of it like having a bigger surf crew and coaches who are there for you week after week, month after month, who get to know your surfing over time. Inside, you’ll find a home for the full surf journey: the technique breakthroughs, the practical progression, the questions that come up between sessions, the confidence-building, and the deeper work that shapes how you show up in and out of the water.

Coaching that grows with you

Submit your surf clips for detailed video breakdowns, including wave lines drawn directly onto your footage and clear feedback on what to work on next. You can also submit clips of surfers who inspire you—whether that’s Mikey February or Stephanie Gilmore—and get a breakdown of what they’re doing.

Coaching comes from Maddy and Timmy, a professional surfer, so you’re not just receiving one-off advice. You’re building an ongoing relationship with coaches who understand your goals and progression.

A community that keeps you intentional

Each month, we come together for group coaching calls, with recordings available to revisit anytime. Weekly check-ins create space for surf intentions, wins, journal prompts, vision boards, favorite surf videos, trip stories, and the real-life moments that come with learning to surf.

Because the more you name your wins, the more you begin to see them.

Support beyond the lineup

Sea State includes an evolving library of resources shaped by what members want to learn—from roundhouses, backside cross steps and nose rides to surfboards, shaping, and workshops with guest speakers.

You’ll also find deeper resources for reconnecting with your love of surfing: guided workbooks, journaling playlists, and conversations around self-trust, self-betrayal, and the mindset side of progression.

Ask questions anytime, get coaching on the go, meet other members at Sea State events, and become part of a community that’s here to cheer you on—both in and out of the water.

Sea state, was an incredible community space where I felt seen for the first time with lots of my struggles with surfing.

It felt really intentional, kind, and collaborative.

With sea state, I started to allow more flow into my life and take my time getting out there, practicing mindfulness, and intention.

If you have felt stuck, and are open to joining a community of women who are experiencing similar feelings - join. It can be really empowering to enter a space where you can be yourself, and work through the walls we all hit when we are trying to improve at a sport that isn’t consistent.

You’re about to understand your relationship to the surf better, and with yourself. It’s 100% worth it. Joining Sea State will facilitate rediscovering the joy and purpose for getting out there.

Sea State is an ongoing membership. A coaching relationship + your crew for the long haul, not a program you finish. And this is the first time it's ever opened to a small community of friends and family.

Founding members lock in this price forever.

When the price goes up for everyone else, yours never changes.

The founding rate ends when this first group fills.

Founding members set the tone of this whole movement. That's you.

you don't have to figure out surfing alone.

The ocean teaches us so much about ourselves. But some of the most important moments are the ones we share. The turn where something finally clicked. The breakthrough you've been chasing for a year. The session that reminds you exactly why surfing is so life-affirming. Those moments were meant to be shared.

And we need somewhere to bring the rest of it too. A place to ask the little (+big) questions, share the frustration, drop the ego, break through the plateau’s, rewrite our limiting beliefs, and practice play in the ocean. A place to drop the weight of the world at the door.

I didn't just build Sea State because I was missing a surf crew (I was). I built it because this beautiful thing we all love, the ocean, the surfing, the devotion, deserves a place to grow. This is for women who want to build a life around the waves, and want guidance to actually make it happen.

You’ll get personal coaching from your coaches Maddy + Timmy, accountability + support from Lauren, and a community of women surfers raising the bar on what’s possible for their life in the ocean.

For way too long I thought becoming a better surfer was the thing that would finally make me feel like I belonged. More confidence, better waves, more experience. But surfing doesn't work that way. Belonging doesn't come after you become good enough.

You belong because you love the ocean. That's the requirement.

Sea State isn't a place you prove yourself before you're welcomed in. You're seen from the moment you arrive. As a woman who loves the water, who is passionate about surfing. Your tendencies, your style, your strengths, your next step. Personalized for your own signature surf style, rather than being forced into someone else's mold.

That's where real belonging and real coaching both begin: being seen.

stop overthinking it + build your self-trust muscle.

When you don’t paddle out, when you don’t take the drop, when you sit on the shoulder, when you don’t hit the steep section.. it's easy to think what you're losing is just the surfing. Reps. chances.

It's more than that.

You’re losing the version of you that surfing brings out. Playful. Free. In your body. The one who feels most like herself with saltwater in her hair and nowhere she has to be. The one who feels proud, satisfied, euphoric after a surf. What if you could have MORE sessions that feel like that, even when you’re still learning how to?

When you’re overthinking it instead of enjoying the process, when weeks pile up without surfing… that’s what hindering your progress. Not your pop-up. Not your cut back. You’re avoiding the “you” that you’re meant to become..

You don't need to get more disciplined. You need a way back to her that doesn't depend on overthinking it alone every paddle out. That's what sea state is for. A place to build the self-trust muscle back, with people who are doing it with you.

the door.

You've been meaning to go through… it’s time.

We see u. Personalized coaching that actually understands your surfing, a crew of women who've got you, and a home for the surfer you're becoming.

The surfing life you dream of is waiting. So come do it with us. Send us your waves. Meet your people. Take your place in the water.
