Sea State Retreat: Salina Cruz

here's what nobody talks about when it comes to getting better at surfing

it's not that you need more tips. it's not a technique problem. and it's definitely not that you started too late.

it's that you never actually get to practice.

at most home breaks you catch a wave, try the thing, wipe out or ride it through, and then wait. wait for the crowd to clear. wait for the right section. wait for conditions that actually give you a wall to work with. if everything lines up, you get maybe five or six real attempts at what you're working on before the session is over.

that's not practice. that's just surfing and hoping.

real practice, the kind that actually breaks a plateau and builds the kind of self-trust that follows you out of the water and into your life, looks like getting the same rippable section over and over again. setting up, going for it, feeling what works, adjusting, doing it again. twenty times before lunch. on a wave that gives you the same opportunity every single time.

that's what sand-bottom point breaks do. and salina cruz does it better than almost anywhere on the planet.

we've been taught that getting better at surfing is about grinding more sessions

but here's what i actually believe: the gap between you and the surfer you dream of being isn't a technique gap. it's a repetition gap. it's a presence gap.

you can't be present on a wave you've only caught twice. you can't find flow on a section that's never the same twice. you can't build self-trust when the ocean never gives you enough clean attempts to feel something actually groove in.

you know exactly what you want to work on

you've had glimpses of it. sessions where everything opened up and you couldn't stop smiling on the walk back to the car. where the wave gave you the wall and you went for it and it was THERE.

and then it was gone. and you paddled back out trying to figure out how to get back to that feeling.

the thing is, you can't get back there by thinking harder. you get back there by getting the same section thirty times until your body stops asking questions and just does it. until the hesitation dissolves not because you talked yourself out of it but because you've done the thing enough times that your nervous system trusts it.

that's what this week is for. and honestly? that's the power of a right sand-bottom point break in oaxaca, mexico <3

we've been taught that getting better at surfing is about grinding more sessions

this isn't a beach vacation with a surf lesson bolted on. every single day is built around the water. the sea state workbook makes every paddle-out intentional. the filming makes every session something you can actually see and learn from. the coaching is individual in an intimate group.

the wave at punta conejo gives you what almost no home break can: repeatable sections. the same rippable wall every single morning. the same opportunity to go for the thing you're working on again and again until it's yours.

in six days of surfing like this, something that's been stuck for months moves when you’re surfing waves that finally gives you enough room to actually practice.

salina cruz, oaxaca

I'm taking 6 amazing women to the land of sand-bottom right point breaks September 26 - October 3! I really shouldn't be saying this… but salina cruz is the surf trip I look forward to the most! I feel a little guilty saying it but… it's my favorite retreat! And I'm goofy which is really saying something because I don't even go right! (just kidding!)

That's how incredible this place is. Why? Because you show up to the charming little Huatulco airport in Oaxaca Mexico and from then on, all you have to worry about is having enough energy to surf your little heart out! I don't know if anything really beats sand-bottom point breaks - especially when it comes to leveling up your surfing. You get repeatable sections to try the maneuvers you are working on over and over again without consequence. When do you get to do that!?

And the perks of staying at the Punta Conejo resort is that everything's taken care of for us. Our meals, our hang out. We'll have two 4x4 trucks to take us to different points in the area, local surf guides who help us score. We'll have a filmer, a drone pilot, and a water photographer !! This isn't pressure - this is an environment where you are free to frolic in the desert!

I love getting to be in nature, in the desert, far away from noise, sleeping at my favorite accommodations, right next to Conejo aka the longest and cleanest wave in the region. Just me the waves, the cactus, the sand dunes and our blue crush crew…

sea state curriculum

over the week we cover:

surf spot knowledge — reading salina cruz, understanding the channel, finding your takeoff spots + positioning in a new lineup

vision + intention setting — anchoring into why you paddle out + what you actually want from your surfing

technique + video analysis — daily clip review with real feedback, in real time, at the wave you're actually surfing

wave selection + positioning — how to read what the wave is doing + get yourself into the right spot, every time

mindset + self-trust — the thing nobody else teaches. the hesitation before the pop up. the apology before you take your place in the lineup. this is where we go.

you'll receive a sea state workbook to guide your sessions all week. this is just for you. there's no right or wrong way to use it. it's a tool for getting intentional about your vision, your goals your surfing.

salina cruz is the retreat i think about when i need something to look forward to. the combination of sand-bottom machine-like waves, the all-inclusive luxury at conejo resort, the desert landscape... it genuinely doesn't get better. i’m goofy and this place actually makes me want to go right!

i've been leading retreats for years + the thing that keeps me doing it isn't the waves (although the waves are incredible). it's watching women arrive tentative + leave surfing with something they can't quite name yet but that you can see in their body language. a kind of belonging in the water. that's what i love most :)

this retreat includes real-time coaching, daily filming, clip review every afternoon, and the sea state workbook to make every session intentional. you won't just be surfing more. you'll be surfing with a different mindset!

"Maddy has been an incredible mentor for me, both in surfing and in life. I’ve had the opportunity to surf with her on retreat in Nicaragua, as well as in California and Mexico, and each experience has been equally impactful.

Her mentorship in the water, her guidance in the waves, and the way she shares her experience have made a lasting impression on me. Maddy brings so much to the table—from deep wave knowledge and thoughtful board selection to her keen eye for photography and the constructive, empowering feedback she offers.

Beyond her skill, it was an honor to be surrounded by her positive energy. She leads by example, and her presence alone elevates the entire experience. She truly lives and breathes the Aloha spirit and is deeply in tune with the rhythms of nature.

She is also a true soul seaster—someone who understands not only how to surf the ocean’s waves, but the waves of the mind as well. Through our shared love of yoga and presence, she brings depth, awareness, and heart into every session, making any experience surfing with her genuinely special."

monday morning, 6:44am. you set your surf intention in the workbook while you’re drinking coffee on the beach. we go down to the point. the wave is already doing the thing: long, clean, peeling all the way through with that giant beautiful channel you paddle around on the way back. you catch your first wave.

tuesday afternoon. you're watching your footage from the morning session. you can SEE the moment just before your bottom turn where you're still deciding instead of committing. for the first time you actually understand what you're doing because you can see it. something clicks. you paddle out for the second session completely different.

wednesday. the guides take us to a different break. you realize the thing you've been drilling at the point has started to show up automatically somewhere new without you thinking about it. you paddle in grinning at something you can't quite name.

thursday morning. you know where to sit. you know where the section is going to throw. you know when to go. you're not figuring it out anymore — you're just surfing. this is what repeatable sections do to a surfer's brain.

friday. the drive to huatulco airport. you have footage of yourself surfing every day this week. you can literally watch yourself get better in real time. the thing you've been working on for months finally felt like yours on day four. you are already thinking about what you're building next.

how it works

every day looks like this:

morning rituals + surf intentions. breakfast at the resort. first surf + filming session with in-water coaching. lunch + group check-in. second surf + filming session. afternoon clip review + sea state lesson. dinner. repeat for six days.

we film twice a day, every session, drone + video + water photography. we sit down with footage every afternoon so you know exactly what to adjust before you paddle out the next morning. coaching is in the water with you individually every session — watching your setup, your read of the wave, the specific thing you're working on that day.

the sea state workbook gives every session a focus. you are not just going out and hoping something clicks. you're paddling out with an intention and coming in with footage of what actually happened.

the wave: punta conejo resort sits right next to one of the longest, most consistent right point breaks in salina cruz. sand-bottom. rippable sections. massive channel (literally no duck diving — you paddle around). multiple takeoff options depending on the swell. we also have two 4x4 trucks + local guides who know every break in the region if we want to explore.

punta conejo resort (all inclusive): ocean-front casitas. king beds. rain showers + these absolutely wild indoor garden bathrooms that you have to see. infinity pool overlooking the ocean. palapa for afternoons. chef-prepared meals three times a day. swim-up bar + heated jacuzzi. we take over the resort for six women only. no strangers. everything taken care of from the moment you land.

what's included: 5 nights at punta conejo · shared ocean-front casita · all meals · 2 in-water coaching sessions daily · 2 filming sessions daily (drone + video + water photography) · afternoon clip review · sea state workbook + gift bags · airport transport to + from huatulco · 4x4 trucks + local surf guides

what's not included: flights to HUX (arrive sept 28, depart oct 3) · alcohol (available at resort) · spending money + tips in pesos · your surfboard (no rentals — bring your board!)

who this is for

the one who's been stuck. you know what you want to work on. you've known for months. you just never get enough clean attempts at the section to actually groove it in. you need a wave that gives you the same rippable wall twenty times a session. that's salina cruz.

the one who surfs but never actually practices. there's a difference between surfing and practicing. you've been surfing. this week is for practicing — with the kind of repetition that actually rewires something.

the one who's never seen herself surf. you have no idea what you actually look like in the water, or you saw yourself once on a shaky phone from the beach and it didn't match how the wave felt at all. you want real footage. you want to know what you're actually doing and what to fix.

the one who's ready for a crew. you've been figuring this out mostly alone. you want six days surrounded by women who are going for it too. who will paddle back out with you. who understand exactly what it feels like when it clicks.

this retreat is for intermediate surfers on shortboards, fishes, or midlengths who can safely catch unbroken waves and handle their own board in the surf.
